Hospice Care

Slanger_070612_7336Stella Maris was one of the first Medicare certified hospices in Maryland. Since 1983, we have provided end of life care to individuals facing a life-limiting illness. Whether care is provided in the home or in our inpatient unit, hospice care at Stella Maris is not just a service, but a part of our Mission.

Hospice focuses on the needs of the patient and family. Our goal is to ensure quality, compassionate care and the alleviation of pain and other symptoms. It is the core belief that each of us has the right to die pain-free and with dignity. Hospice supports the patient, family and friends through this journey by providing spiritual, emotional support and care as determined by the interdisciplinary team. The Counseling Center at Stella Maris reaches out to our patients and families for anticipatory grief and bereavement counseling.

The interdisciplinary team is comprised of the hospice medical director, who is board certified in hospice and palliative care medicine, physicians, nurse practitioners, RNs, aides, social workers, pastoral care, hospice-trained volunteers, and grief and loss counselors. All members of the team are available to guide the patient and family through the end-of-life journey.

Home Hospice

One of the benefits of hospice is that it can be provided anywhere. The Home Hospice Program provides services in the home, in assisted living facilities, in the nursing home at Stella Maris, as well as other nursing home settings. Stella Maris Home Hospice Care covers a wide geographic region including Baltimore City, and Baltimore, Harford and Carroll counties.

In-patient Hospice

There are times when a patient or family requires more assistance than home hospice can provide. For these occasions, Stella Maris has an in-patient hospice unit. The hospice unit has private room accommodations for patients. Rooms are spacious so that families may send the night if they wish. To assist in making your visit comfortable, there are many gathering areas such as a sun room, kitchen, library and terrace, where patients and families can be together to reflect and to reminisce. With unlimited visiting hours, families and friends are encouraged to come and go as they please. Pets are welcomed on the hospice unit.

Hospice Eligibility

Individuals with a life limiting illness with a prognosis of six months or less are eligible to receive hospice services. Patients and families who are interested in receiving services will be guided through the process by our community liaisons and admitting staff. Our community liaisons are able to meet in your home, physician office or hospital. Patients and families will receive information on insurance coverage and levels of hospice care prior to admission into our hospice program.

Stella Maris accepts Medicare/Medicaid and most private insurances. In keeping with the Mercy value of Justice, Stella Maris provides for uninsured and under-insured patients at the end of life. Patients with financial needs can apply for assistance through the Lyness Fund, an endowment fund established at Stella Maris in honor of Monsignor John U. Lyness. He was the first person admitted to the hospice in-patient unit at Stella Maris.
